Harness FAQs
A good fit in the harness is essential to keep your pup safe! As a general guide, the harness should be snug in the neck and chest, but you should be able to fit two fingers between the straps and your pup’s body. If you’re unsure if the fit is right, our Product Experts are always happy to take a look - reach out to us!
Our Everything Harnesses & Complete Control Harness have two buckles - one for the neck strap and another for the chest strap. When it comes to putting on a dog harness, the easiest way is to undo both buckles and place the harness on your pup's back. Once it is placed, you can put your pup's leg through and then do both buckles up. This same method can be used by placing the harness on the floor and having your pup step into the harness and bringing the straps up around them.
Yes, dog harnesses can help with dogs that pull on walks especially if you use a no-pull harness. The best no-pull dog harnesses have the option of a front D-ring to clip the leash into to change the point of leverage, so when your pup pulls, the harness simply redirects the dog to the side and back towards you! The harness will help deter pulling on its own, but you’ll also be teaching your pet that a loose leash is the only way they will proceed with their walk, and a tight leash means they must stop moving. The front D-ring sits at a point on the dog's chest where it should not cause any unwanted neck tension, making it the best harness for dogs that pull.
Harnesses can be layered with outerwear or cooling gear - we recommend putting the harness on first to ensure a good fit. At Canada Pooch, you’ll find the best apparel and harnesses for small or large dogs. All our coats and knits have a slit along the back that allows for a leash to attach to a harness!

To measure a dog for a harness, you first need to measure the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind the front legs, using a soft measuring tape. Then, measure the circumference of your dog's neck where a collar would normally sit. It's important to ensure the tape is snug but not tight and to reference our size guide to find the right fit for your pup.
Walking your dog with a harness is often considered better than using a collar, especially for dogs that pull. A harness provides more control without putting pressure on your dog's throat, which is safer and more comfortable for them. Moreover, harnesses distribute pressure more evenly across the body, making walks and training sessions more enjoyable for both the dog and the owner.
